The Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textile, Govt. of India, has successfully implemented a number of schemes during the 10th Plan period which included three major schemes viz : Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana, Marketing Support Services & Design and Technology Upgradation Scheme. These schemes in view of the successful acceptance by the sector have been continued to be implemented during the 11th Five Year Plan with some minor modifications or additions of a few components.
The end beneficiary of each of the above three schemes is the artisan, who creates wonders with his hand and his efforts are supplemented by the schemes of our office to improve his economic status. Under this scenario of further continuing these schemes for implementation during the 11th Five Year Plan, it has been felt necessary to have a trace analysis of the beneficiaries of these three schemes conducted, to draw an assessment of their economic growth and thereby get an impact on the development of handicrafts sector in the country.
